Show Me the Evidence: What We Actually Know About Kids Leaving Sports

You have seen the number. Seventy percent of kids quit sports by age 13. It appears in conference talks, parent handouts, coaching certifications, and roughly every third LinkedIn post about youth sports. It is repeated with the confidence of settled science.

It is not settled science. It may not be science at all.

Where the 70% statistic actually comes from

Trace the number backward and it converges on a single sentence in a 2016 Washington Post parenting column, which attributes it to “a poll from the National Alliance for Youth Sports.”¹ That is the whole provenance. No sample size. No sampling frame. No publication date. No methodology section. No peer review.

From there it propagated. The Post piece was syndicated, aggregated, and quoted. Subsequent articles cited the Post. Later articles cited those articles. Conference slides cited the slides that came before them. Somewhere in the chain, “a poll” quietly became “research shows.”

The likely ancestor is older still. Survey work from the early 1990s—including the Athletic Footwear Association’s American Youth and Sports Participation project, which surveyed more than 10,000 young people across 11 U.S. cities—established that organized sport participation declines sharply with age and that “not fun anymore” ranks among the primary reasons given for stopping. Those findings were real and, for their time, substantial. But they described a youth sports landscape that predates club sport professionalization, year-round travel teams, social media, and the private equity capital now flowing through the sector. Citing them today, laundered through three decades of secondhand attribution, is not evidence. It is folklore wearing a lab coat.

I want to be precise here, because precision is the entire point of this post: I cannot prove the 1990s survey work is the origin of the 70% figure. Nobody can, because the figure has no traceable origin. That is exactly the problem.

What the peer-reviewed literature actually shows

The honest summary is that the direction is well supported, and the magnitude has never been cleanly established in the way the slogan implies.

Møllerløkken and colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of dropout in youth soccer, pooling data from 724,036 youths aged 10 to 18 across five countries. They found an annual weighted mean dropout rate of approximately 24%, with higher rates in girls (26.8%) than boys (21.4%). Critically, the meta-regression showed that annual dropout rates were relatively stable across ages 10 to 19 rather than spiking at any particular age.²

Note what that does and does not say. A 24% annual attrition rate compounds substantially over several years, so a large cumulative figure is plausible. But it is sport-specific, it is not U.S.-specific, and it does not identify 13 as a cliff edge. The stability across ages is arguably the more interesting finding, and it is the one the slogan erases.

Back and colleagues published a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies on team sport dropout in adolescents, synthesizing 16 studies.³ Their contribution was identifying risk factors rather than prevalence: intrapersonal constructs related to motivation and sport experience showed the strongest associations with dropout, while satisfaction of basic psychological needs, technical skill development, and social support were protective. Moulds and colleagues reached compatible conclusions in their systematic review organized around the Process-Person-Context-Time model.⁴

So the mechanistic picture is reasonably coherent: kids leave when motivational needs go unmet, when they do not perceive competence, and when the social environment fails them. That is actionable. “Seventy percent by 13” is not.

The population-level data

For U.S. prevalence, the best available source is the Aspen Institute’s Project Play, which synthesizes federal National Survey of Children’s Health data with Sports & Fitness Industry Association household survey data. This is policy-grade analysis rather than peer-reviewed research, and it should be labeled as such—but it is transparent about its sources and methods, which is more than the 70% figure can claim.

State of Play 2025 reports that organized participation among youth ages 6 to 17 rebounded to 55.4% as of 2023, the highest rate since before the pandemic.⁵ Costs, however, rose 46% since 2019, with the average family spending $1,016 on a child’s primary sport in 2024.⁶ The participation gap between the highest- and lowest-income households widened from 13.6 percentage points in 2012 to 20.2 points in 2024.⁵

That is a materially different story from a burnout epidemic. It is a story about access, affordability, and stratification.

The question nobody is asking

The most useful paper in this literature may be Battaglia, Kerr, and Tamminen’s 2024 analysis in Kinesiology Review, which challenges the crisis framing directly.⁷ Their argument has three parts. First, “dropout” lacks conceptual clarity—it bundles together the child who switches sports, the child who moves to unstructured activity, the child who is cut, the child priced out, and the child who leaves an abusive environment. Second, declining organized participation may reflect developmentally appropriate transitions rather than loss. Third, disengagement can be a protective outcome when the sport environment is harmful.

This is the same analytic error we make repeatedly in this field. We take a composite variable, treat it as a single construct, attach a dramatic number to it, and then design interventions against a phenomenon we have not defined. Sport specialization has the same problem. So does “fatigue” in the injury literature. When the outcome variable is a bundle, the harms attach to specific components, not the composite—and averaging across them tells you almost nothing about what to change on Tuesday afternoon at practice.

Why this matters for practitioners

A colleague could reasonably ask: does it matter? Kids are leaving sports. The number is roughly directionally right. Why litigate the citation?

Three reasons.

It misdirects intervention. If the problem is “burnout at 13,” you build resilience programming for eighth graders. If the problem is a 46% cost increase and a widening income gap, you build subsidy structures and community-based programming. Those are not the same intervention, and the slogan points toward the wrong one.

It costs us credibility. We ask parents and coaches to trust evidence-based practice. When our headline statistic collapses under thirty seconds of scrutiny, we have handed the skeptics a legitimate point.

It substitutes for the harder work. A memorable number feels like understanding. It is not. The peer-reviewed literature offers something more useful—specific, modifiable risk factors with reasonable mechanistic support—but it does not fit on a graphic.

The kids leaving sports are real. So are the reasons. We should be able to describe both without borrowing a number from a poll nobody can find.
