An interesting review article was recently published by the NSCA on what helps athletes (soccer players in particular) kick farther.  The authors provide a number of training methods to improve kicking distance, including strength, power exercises, and speed training.  Take home message, aside from technique, plyometric exercise (also known as jump training) appears to be the best method to improve kicking distance.
